The Monte Castello International Masterclass for Strings is a NEW and VERY exciting initiative of the Wallfisch Band.

The masterclasses are set in the most beautiful part of Umbria, South of Perugia, near Todi.

The atmosphere is redolent of the tastes of summer in Italy:

Good wines, music, food, laughter, open-air concerts, golf, swimming, intense masterclasses on great Italian music, companionship and most important of all,

LEARNING.

Students of violin, viola, cello, viola da gamba, double bass/violone, and harpsichord are invited to apply.

Applicants:

Please apply if you have-

Some experience, and a desire to learn, with special attention to the styles of the 18th Century in Music.

·      Nowadays this is central to any study of an instrument, for a young player to have this knowledge to take into their professional lives.

Our Masterclass aims:

-to stimulate and encourage curiosity  and passion in the discovery of the arts of historically informed performance,

-to foster the international exchange between established artists, fine students and young professionals.

Vivaldi, Corelli

This year, the masterclasses are dedicated to:

Concerti for strings, op 3, op 8, and Sonatas op 2, and Trio Sonatas, by Vivaldi.

Concerti Grossi op 6, Trio Sonatas, op 1,2,3,4, and the Sonatas op 5 by Corelli.

and if there is time, a look at their contemporaries in Venice, and Rome.

Participants will be presenting the result of their work together in a public concert on 22nd July in Monte Castello di Vibio.

During the week, all participants and staff will give informal open-air presentations of some of the chamber music and solo works studied in the class, in the exquisite piazzas in the village, to the accompaniment of vino, and pizzas!

A kind of jam, er pizza session after work!

TRAVEL information:

By Air:

There are four times weekly Ryanair flights from London Stansted to Perugia, which is 30 minute drive away. Cars can be rented there.

But we will arrange to pick musicians up on the flight arriving on Tuesday July 17th morning. Remember to book early  and book in your instrument.

Flights to Rome Fiumicino and Rome Ciampino airports are numerous and a good alternative.

There is an express train from Fiumicino to Rome Termini, from whence take a train to Terni. There is a service from there on a local line (tickets for sale on train) to Perugia, which stops at Fratta Todina/Monte Castello di Vibio, and we will arrange pick-up. Or if connections don't work, we can pick up from Terni.

NB Remember to stamp your ticket on the platform (yellow stamping machines) or you risk a fine.

If you plan to rent a car, then Pisa and Ancona are alternatives.

By Train:

There are good train services in Italy. From Firenze (and elsewhere) travel to Perugia Ponte San Giovanni, whence there is a local train service towards Terni, which stops at Fratta Todina/Monte Castello di Vibio.

Turn left immediately after the bridge across the Tiber (Tevere). We will give local instructions from there, depending on who is your host.
